**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unfamiliar was not something I typically embraced. Now, as I reflect, I recognize that this past year has been life-changing—characterized by development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting trials I encountered was the task of making friends. For many incoming students, this is one of the primary worries associated with starting university, and I was no exception. On my very first day moving into my residence, mere days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and sparking small conversations with fellow students navigating similar situations.

What did I take away from this? I learned that making that initial move at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not quite ready or feel uneasy, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I discovered that embracing your true self is essential. Given the vast diversity within the Imperial community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Another major hurdle was acclimating to the intense workload and challenging course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Maintaining confidence was not always straightforward, particularly when I observed others studying and questioned my own efforts.

What assisted me in overcoming this was the understanding that we were all experiencing similar struggles. If I couldn’t grasp something, chances are others were having difficulty too. The crucial lesson? Seek assistance. This perhaps represents the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year. Whether reaching out to classmates or academic staff, obtaining support is indispensable.

### The Encouraging Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors sincerely care about students’ success and are keenly aware of the hurdles we confront. They empathize with our situations and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to resolve any issues that may arise.

I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until late in the year, a decision I regret not making earlier. Volunteering as a year well-being representative was one of the early leaps I took, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial.

There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and I strongly advise taking advantage of these chances. The assistance they provide exists for a purpose, and you can never have an excess of support.

### Insights Gained

As I look back on my inaugural year, I’ve realized that the unease I experienced—both before entering university and throughout the academic year—was largely unwarranted. Numerous support frameworks are in place, from faculty to fellow students, designed to help you navigate challenges.

Above all, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly isolated. This year has taught me the importance of managing stress from exams and deadlines while also enjoying myself and making the most out of my university experience.

If you are on the verge of beginning your own university journey, remember to take that bold step, be authentic, and don’t shy away from seeking assistance. You’ll be amazed by how much you can evolve in just one year.
