**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the road ahead. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introspective and reserved, plunging into the unknown was not something I was familiar with. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyable moments, I can appreciate how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve advanced.
### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is a primary concern when starting university, and I felt the same way. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the start of the semester, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever experienced. These bonds have become my second family here at Imperial, and they all originated from small, humble beginnings—such as having light conversations with fellow students who were just as apprehensive as I was.
So, what insights did I gain? I realized that taking that initial step at the beginning of the year truly pays off. Even if it feels daunting, numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others will be available. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With a rich tapestry of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to discover others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another notable challenge was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-level studies to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when observing others studying and worrying that you’re lagging behind.
What helped me navigate this was recognizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are feeling the same. The essential lesson I learned in my first year was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and support staff genuinely desire for students to excel and are aware of the challenges we encounter. They maintain transparent communication with us throughout the year and are always eager to assist.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Taking that step to seek help was transformative. At the beginning of the year, I also took a chance by volunteering as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster connections with faculty, which proved to be invaluable.
There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and I strongly recommend seizing these opportunities. Whether through formal positions or casual discussions, establishing those connections can greatly enhance your experience. My biggest takeaway? Never shy away from utilizing the resources and support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has demonstrated that the apprehension I felt before and during university was often unfounded. With the ample support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines while embracing moments of joy and enjoyment.
Reflecting on the past year, my first experience at Imperial has been a journey of self-discovery, academic challenges, and unforgettable memories. If you’re an incoming student feeling anxious about starting university, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel that way—but also know that you will find your groove, forge meaningful relationships, and flourish in ways you might never have anticipated.
