**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and trepidation about what was to come. I was on the cusp of embarking on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been rather reserved and introverted, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with growth, obstacles, and abundant joy, I can appreciate how transformative this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships
One of the greatest challenges I encountered early in the year was establishing friendships. Beginning university can be quite intimidating, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern you share. On my first day in student accommodation, just a few days before the term officially commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.
Fast-forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I could have hoped for. The individuals I’ve connected with here—both within my program and across the wider university community—have become like a second family to me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
What have I gleaned from this experience? First, it’s always worthwhile to take that first step at the outset of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be countless icebreaker events and opportunities to meet new people. Second, simply be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.
### Overcoming Academic Hurdles
Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the increased complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by other high-achieving peers.
What aided me was recognizing that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The key is to reach out for help—whether it’s from fellow students or faculty. Cultivating the ability to seek assistance is possibly the most crucial skill to develop in your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, I can’t stress enough how remarkable the Materials department is. The lecturers and support staff genuinely want to see students thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year, addressing any issues we might have.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available to me until the end of the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One of my best decisions was becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, building relationships with the staff is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My principal takeaway? Utilize the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Lessons Acquired
In hindsight, this year has taught me that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to starting university and during the year—were baseless. With the extensive support from faculty and fellow students, I realized I was never genuinely alone. I also learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with enjoyable moments and leisure.
To summarize, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of personal development, self-exploration, and building connections. If you are on the verge of starting your own university experience, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, embrace the obstacles, and don’t shy away from seeking assistance. You’ll be astounded at how far you can progress.
