**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months earlier, in October 2022, I was consumed by nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was on the brink of starting my first year as a newcomer in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar was well outside my comfort zone. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Taking the Leap: Forming Connections
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. The start of university can be quite overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your primary worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to emerge and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my academic program and throughout the university. It all began with brief conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.
What did I discover? I found that taking that initial leap of faith is worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or at ease right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I understood the importance of being myself. With such a diverse group of individuals at university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adjusting to the volume of work and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even greater. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your competence when you observe others studying and believe they’re ahead.
What aided me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential lesson I learned in my first year is to seek assistance. This is perhaps the most crucial insight I gained—never hesitate to contact your peers or the academic staff when you require help.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and are well aware of the obstacles we encounter. They are understanding and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to address any concerns.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Early on, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my year, which helped me forge relationships with faculty members. This proved to be invaluable. There are numerous pathways to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My most significant realization here is to utilize the help and resources accessible—there’s no such thing as too much support!
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the anxiety I experienced before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was often unwarranted. An abundance of support exists, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you in navigating challenges. I’ve learned that I am never truly alone and that it is feasible to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with instances of joy and enjoyment.
Looking back, I take pride in how far I’ve progressed since that anxious freshman in October 2022. The journey has been one of growth, perseverance, and exploration, and I eagerly anticipate what the future has in store.
