**Living in London: Nine Months of Perspectives**
*Authored by Harsh Gupta, MSc. Advanced Materials Science and Engineering*

Nine months ago, I started my experience of residing in London. Although this may not appear to be a lengthy duration, it has provided me with significant insights into life within this lively and multifaceted city. London is celebrated not only for its rich history and iconic cultural sites but also for its extensive range of housing options and vibrant communities that inhabit it. Whether you are a student or a working professional, the city presents an array of choices tailored to various needs and financial capacities.

For students, the choices are plentiful. From student accommodations to private rentals, you can select from ensuite rooms, co-living arrangements, studio flats, or house shares. Domestic students can easily arrange in-person visits, while international students can depend on websites such as Rightmove, Zoopla, or SpareRoom to browse listings online, review amenities, and evaluate distances to public transport options.

### Locating Your New Home

When I initiated my search, I concentrated on securing a room in Central London to remain near major landmarks, social facilities, and, most crucially, Imperial College’s campus. London is organized into six concentric zones, with the first two zones being the most central. The city benefits from an outstanding public transport system—including the Underground (tube), buses, and trains—which simplifies travel between these zones.

However, the costs of commuting can accumulate rapidly. For example, traveling between zones can cost as much as £5.25 daily. To economize, I opted to walk shorter trips rather than depend on public transport. For longer journeys, I discovered that the Oyster card is a budget-friendly option for students. In addition to the Underground, the London Overground and National Rail services extend beyond central London, although ticket prices fluctuate based on distance and the service provider.

Residing in Central London has its advantages but also comes with elevated living expenses. To mitigate costs, I made the decision to share a room with a friend, which significantly lowered our rent. I also chose intercollegiate student housing, as it offered a chance to connect with peers from varied backgrounds and similar age groups—something that private rentals might not readily provide.

### Accessibility to Essentials

A top priority for me was to live close to supermarkets. Stores like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op are prevalent, while budget-friendly alternatives include Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland. Being near essential retailers and pharmacies proved indispensable, especially during intense exam periods when every minute counts.

### Celebrating London’s Diversity

Selecting the right area to live in London can be a daunting task, given the city’s vastness and diversity. The ethnic communities of London significantly contribute to its cultural wealth, offering a sense of connection for international residents.

For example, Southall in West London features a large South Asian population, with a variety of Indian restaurants, grocery shops, and traditional clothing stores. Brixton in South London is famed for its Afro-Caribbean culture and thriving music scene. Meanwhile, Chinatown in the West End is a lively district filled with Chinese eateries, shops, and cultural festivities. These neighborhoods exemplify how London’s communities foster a sense of belonging for individuals from all corners of the globe.

### Discovering Your Perfect Area

Ultimately, the most suitable area to reside in London depends on your personal preferences and requirements. Whether you are inclined towards cultural hotspots, convenient access to your college, or financial viability, London has something to cater to everyone.

As you navigate your search for a new home in this exceptional city, take the time to investigate its wide-ranging accommodation choices, immerse yourself in its cultural neighborhoods, and savor the convenience and allure that London promises.
