**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by feelings of anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, the thought of plunging into this new experience was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments, I can appreciate how much I’ve grown and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Confronting the Anxiety of Making Friends

Among the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may share the same concerns. I certainly did. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to go out and meet anyone.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve met at Imperial and in my program have become like a second family. It all began with stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain as I was.

So, what did I take away from this experience? I discovered that taking that initial leap at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, I found that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Challenges

Another major obstacle was adapting to the workload and the level of complexity in my course. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more formidable. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and appearing to have everything together.

What assisted me during those moments of uncertainty was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to comprehend, chances are others are feeling the same way. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from peers or the teaching staff. In my view, acquiring the ability to ask for help is the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Supportive Staff

On the topic of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors truly desire for students to thrive, and they are aware of the challenges we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and demonstrated understanding of our struggles.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had embraced it earlier. One significant step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual interactions, building relationships with the staff is one of the best things you can do for yourself. My chief lesson? Don’t hesitate to take advantage of the support and resources at your disposal—you can never get too much help!

### Lessons Learned

In summary, my first year at university has imparted a wealth of knowledge. I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted and could be alleviated by the abundant support from staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned to strike a balance between enjoying myself and managing the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.

Looking back, I take pride in how much I’ve evolved and am eager for what lies ahead in the coming years.
