**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and ambiguity about my future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into such a fresh and demanding setting felt quite daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re a future student, this may be one of your primary concerns as well. On my first day of settling into my university accommodation, mere days before the semester officially kicked off, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve established some of the most wonderful friendships in my life.
At Imperial, I’ve discovered a new family—both in my course and throughout the university. What was instrumental in getting to this point? Taking that initial courageous step to engage in small talk with others who shared my feelings.
What I’ve come to understand is this: it’s always beneficial to push yourself out of your comfort zone at the start of the academic year. If you’re not quite ready right away, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, just remain authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another significant challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was profound, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Remaining self-assured in such a demanding atmosphere wasn’t always straightforward. At times, I caught myself comparing my journey to that of my peers, questioning my capabilities.
What aided me through this experience was the understanding that everyone faced similar struggles. If you find yourself puzzled by a concept, it’s likely others share your confusion. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to request help may be the most vital skill to cultivate during your initial year.
### The Encouraging Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how fantastic the Materials department is. The lecturers and support team are genuinely invested in the success of students and are well aware of the challenges we encounter. They are compassionate and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year.
Though I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Initially, I took a brave step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway here? Utilize the support that’s provided—you can never have an excess of help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my initial year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often misplaced. With a variety of support options from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.
This year has shown me how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and enjoyment. It has demonstrated that stepping outside my comfort zone, reaching out for help, and being true to myself can lead to remarkable growth and significant relationships.
So, to anyone on the brink of commencing their own university path: embrace the challenges, take those bold leaps, and remember that you are not alone.
