**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was in store for me. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been more reserved and introverted, stepping into the unknown was far from my usual experience. Now, reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant growth, challenges, and enjoyable experiences. So, what have I gained from this, and where am I now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges of starting university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re a future student reading this, it may be a concern for you as well. I recall my first day moving into my accommodation just days before the semester commenced. I hid in my room throughout the entire day, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to say I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve met here—both within my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. And all it took was initiating some small talk with those who were experiencing the same uncertainties.
So, what lesson did I learn? Taking that first step of courage at the year’s onset is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, that’s understandable! There are countless icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Adjusting to the academic rigor and complexity of the course content was another crucial challenge. The transition from A-levels to university life was distinctly noticeable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more profound. It wasn’t always easy to maintain my confidence amid so many brilliant classmates. At times, I found myself doubting my capabilities.
What helped me navigate those challenging moments was understanding that my peers were likely experiencing the same struggles. If I didn’t grasp a topic, there were undoubtedly others in the same situation. The solution was straightforward: seek assistance. Whether from fellow students or faculty, reaching out for support is one of the most essential skills to cultivate in your freshman year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are cognizant of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication and demonstrated understanding of our difficulties.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. At the year’s outset, I took a chance by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to forge valuable connections with staff members. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the faculty, and I strongly suggest taking advantage of them—it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself.
My primary takeaway from this experience is clear: utilize the support systems accessible to you. Be it academic guidance, pastoral care, or simply advice, you can never have too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve realized that the nerves I felt—both before beginning university and throughout the year—were often unwarranted. Thanks to the extensive support from staff and peers, those fears became manageable. I have learned that I am never truly alone, and I’ve discovered how to balance enjoyment with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
To anyone about to start their university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You will grow in ways you never anticipated, and you might even have the time of your life.
