**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty as I prepared to commence my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who tends to be introverted and cautious, venturing into the unfamiliar was far from where I felt secure. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and a plethora of unforgettable experiences, I can assertively state that it has been a life-changing journey. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was the task of making new acquaintances. If you are a prospective student reading this, you may relate to my feelings. On my initial day in student housing, merely days prior to the semester kicking off, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to the present, and I am thrilled to say I have forged some of the most treasured friendships I could have hoped for—friends who have become akin to a second family.
What proved beneficial for me? Taking that first step of courage. Engaging in conversations with individuals who were just as anxious and keen to connect as I was made all the difference. If you’re not quite ready to jump right in, that’s perfectly fine. Universities, including Imperial, provide numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet other students. The essential takeaway? Be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.
### Facing the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adapting to the new workload and the increased complexity of the course material. The transition from A-level studies to university was apparent, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others appearing to thrive.
What carried me through those moments of uncertainty was the understanding that everyone shares these feelings. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most vital lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out can significantly alter your experience.
### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
With regard to faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and administrative staff truly care about student success and are sympathetic to the hurdles we encounter. They keep communication lines open throughout the year, addressing student inquiries and offering direction.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the very end of the year, I wish I’d taken advantage of it earlier. Early in the year, I made the bold choice to become a wellbeing representative for my year, which enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty. This proved to be an invaluable opportunity. Whether through official roles or informal chats, getting to know your lecturers and support staff is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My recommendation? Utilize the available resources and assistance—you can never have an excess of support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that much of the apprehension I experienced—both prior to beginning university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. The support systems established, ranging from faculty to fellow students, made a world of difference. I’ve realized that I am never truly isolated, and I’ve learned how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while still cherishing moments of happiness and accomplishment.
This year has brought about significant personal development, and I look forward to what the future has in store as I continue my path in Materials Science and Engineering.
