### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and doubt about the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, venturing into the unknown felt quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of substantial personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might share the same feelings of anxiety. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. My fellow students have become like family to me, both in the university setting and within my course. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who felt as nervous as I did.

What did I learn? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is immensely rewarding. If you find yourself unprepared or uncomfortable right away, there’s no need to fret—plenty of ice-breakers and chances to meet others will present themselves. Most importantly, just stay true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who share your interests and values.

#### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another notable challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and moving from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. Being in such a rigorous academic environment can sometimes shake your self-assurance, especially when you observe others thriving while you find it harder to keep pace.

What aided me during this time was realizing that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from your fellow students or your instructors. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.

#### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of the faculty, I must highlight how incredibly supportive the Materials Science department is. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in your success and are understanding of the hurdles students encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year, addressing any concerns we bring up.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until late in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. One of the best choices I made was taking on the role of a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff, which became invaluable. Whether through formal roles or casual conversations, getting acquainted with the faculty is one of the best things you can do for yourself. My greatest lesson? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Insights Gained

In hindsight, this year has demonstrated to me that the apprehension I experienced—both before entering university and throughout the year—was frequently without basis. Numerous resources and support structures are available, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no obstacle feels unmanageable.

Most significantly, I’ve discovered that I am never alone. Whether dealing with academic stresses or carving out time for enjoyment amid exams and deadlines, there’s always someone to rely on. This year has been a transformative journey, and I look forward to what the future holds.
