**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and doubt regarding the path ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who had always been introverted and timid, venturing into the unknown felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I recognize how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve advanced.

### Navigating the Challenge of Friendships

One of the most daunting aspects of commencing university was the prospect of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your primary worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, just before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve created some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

These connections didn’t happen instantly, but rather blossomed from small steps—like engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain. Over time, these relationships evolved into a second family at Imperial. What did I discover? Taking that first step is invaluable. If you’re not ready immediately, it’s alright—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Academic Shift

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the complexity of the coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying, appearing to have everything under control.

What propelled me forward was recognizing that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping something, chances are others share that struggle as well. The crucial factor is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is one of the most invaluable skills you can acquire in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are sensitive to the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was a bold move I made at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be an outstanding decision. It allowed me to forge relationships with faculty members, which has proven to be immensely beneficial. Numerous avenues exist for connecting with staff, and I highly recommend seizing these opportunities. The support they provide exists for a purpose—don’t hesitate to utilize it.

### Reflections Gained

Looking back, this year has illustrated to me that many of the apprehensions I harbored—both prior to and during my university experience—were unfounded. Thanks to the abundance of support available from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned how to balance the pressures from exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.

If I could impart one piece of advice to incoming students, it would be this: embrace the anxiety, take those bold leaps, and don’t shy away from asking for assistance. University is a time for personal development, and with the right outlook and support, you’ll emerge stronger and more self-assured than ever.
