### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Now, upon reflection, I recognize an academic year enriched with personal development, challenges, and a good deal of happiness. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where do I find myself today?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

A daunting challenge I encountered was forming friendships. For countless incoming students, this poses one of the greatest worries about starting university, and I was no different. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day quietly in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve connected with some of the closest friends I’ve ever had—friends who truly feel like a second family. It merely required stepping outside of my comfort zone and initiating small chats with others who were experiencing the same feelings.

So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking a risk at the onset of the year is undoubtedly worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I discovered that being genuine is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter individuals who resonate with you.

#### Addressing Academic Challenges

Another major obstacle was acclimating to the rigorous workload and the complexity of the course materials. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more significant. Being in such an intellectually demanding setting can momentarily undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and begin to feel left behind.

What supported me through this phase was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If something is bewildering, it’s likely that others are equally puzzled. The most crucial lesson I gained in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it be from fellow students or faculty, reaching out can truly make a substantial difference.

#### Encouragement from the Materials Department

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors sincerely desire for students to thrive and are fully aware of the hurdles we encounter. They empathize with our situations and keep open lines of communication throughout the year to address any issues.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I do wish I had sought it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position cultivated relationships with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!

#### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was often unmerited. There is a wealth of support available, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating various challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that it’s entirely feasible to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of fun and enjoyment.

This year has been a period of significant growth, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead as I advance in my journey within Materials Science and Engineering.
