**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, jumping into the unknown felt incredibly intimidating. Now, reflecting on a year that has been rich with development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyable experiences, I realize how much I have absorbed and how far I’ve advanced.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

A major source of anxiety when starting university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re a future student reading this, you might share those feelings. On my initial day in student housing, I spent a considerable amount of time sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

These bonds, which have become akin to a second family, began through small gestures—simple exchanges with peers who were equally anxious. What I’ve come to understand is that making that first move is always beneficial. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing Academic Challenges

Adapting to the academic demands and the elevated complexity of university-level material was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel daunted or to question your capabilities when you’re surrounded by high-achieving classmates.

What aided me was recognizing that I wasn’t in this alone. Everyone was encountering similar obstacles, and chances were, if I was struggling to comprehend something, others were too. Seeking assistance became my essential support. Whether I reached out to fellow students or faculty, asking for help was crucial. If there’s one recommendation I would offer to first-year students, it would be this: don’t be afraid to seek help.

### Support from the Materials Department

A notable highlight of my experience has been the exceptional support from the staff in Materials Science and Engineering. They genuinely care about students succeeding and are aware of the challenges we encounter. Their compassion and open communication throughout the year have been priceless.

Even though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, I now wish I had utilized it sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took early on, and it turned out to be a wonderful choice. It helped me establish connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely valuable. Whether through official roles or casual encounters, getting to know the staff is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Make the most of the support and resources available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Key Takeaways

Looking back on the year, I’ve realized that much of the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even during—was often unwarranted. With the abundance of support from both faculty and peers, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while still finding moments of joy and enjoyment.

For anyone about to embark on their university journey, understand that it’s normal to feel anxious. But know that you’ll evolve, adjust, and carve out your niche. Take that leap, seek help, and relish the experience—it’s all a part of the journey.
