**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubts regarding the upcoming journey. I was about to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, stepping into the unknown felt particularly intimidating. Now, reflecting on a year brimming with growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Breaking the Ice: Forming Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For a lot of incoming students, this is a major concern about starting university. On my first day in student housing, just a few days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the best friends of my life.
These connections have become my second family during my time at Imperial. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings. My most important lesson? Take that plunge early. Even if you’re unsure or uncomfortable, numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others will come your way. Most importantly, remain authentic to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adjusting to the increased workload and the advanced complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university level was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second proved to be even tougher. Being immersed in such a demanding academic environment can challenge your self-confidence, especially when you perceive others flourishing while you’re striving to keep pace.
What benefited me the most was reminding myself that everyone is on a similar journey. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty members, reaching out for support is one of the most crucial skills to cultivate in your first year.
### Guidance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and tutors genuinely care about our success and understand the difficulties we encounter. They maintain open channels of communication throughout the school year and are consistently available to address our concerns.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, but I wish I’d leveraged it earlier. One of my best choices was becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Take full advantage of the support available—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has shown me that much of the anxiety I felt before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was largely unfounded. With the extensive support from faculty and fellow students, I realized I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of happiness and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my first year in Materials Science and Engineering has been a transformative journey. It has highlighted the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone, asking for help when necessary, and seizing the opportunities around me. If you’re on the verge of starting your university adventure, understand that feeling nervous is perfectly normal—but also recognize that you have the capability to thrive.
