**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted, stepping into the unknown was not something I was used to. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of substantial growth, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where am I today?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I faced initially was making friends. If you’re a prospective student browsing this, it’s likely one of your biggest concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before the term officially started, I spent the entire time secluding myself in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and all it required was a little casual conversation with others who were equally anxious.
What have I gleaned from this experience? I realized that taking that first step is essential. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events tailored to help you connect with your peers. Most importantly, I found that being true to yourself is paramount. With such a diverse array of personalities and backgrounds throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with you.
### Managing the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second appeared even more intense. Being thrust into such a demanding environment can undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind. However, one thing that reassured me was the understanding that everyone is on the same journey. If you don’t grasp something, chances are others don’t either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might well be the most crucial lesson I learned during my first year—always seek assistance from both peers and faculty.
### The Significance of Staff Support
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how encouraging the Materials department is. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about your success and acknowledge that students frequently encounter difficulties. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year, addressing any issues we may face. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This role provided me the opportunity to connect more closely with the staff, which has been incredibly beneficial. There are many pathways to cultivate relationships with faculty members, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway here is to make the most of the support available to you—there is no such thing as too much help!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was largely unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, that can assist you in navigating any challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to strike a balance between enjoying my time and managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
