**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had traditionally been shy and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was not my usual forte. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a period rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current stance?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most formidable obstacles I confronted at the onset of university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may share similar concerns. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with a bit of casual conversation with those who were equally apprehensive.
So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take that initial plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, there’s no need to fret—numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet people will arise. Most importantly, I discovered that if you can be anything, be your authentic self. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who connect with you.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another pivotal challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the elevated complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was certainly substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second proved to be even more daunting. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic setting can undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and start to question your own capabilities.
What aided me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, there’s a good chance others are equally confused. The most crucial lesson I absorbed during my inaugural year was to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### Assistance from the Staff
On the subject of staff, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the support from the Materials department has been. The lecturers and tutors genuinely want you to thrive and are attuned to the challenges students encounter. They ensure ongoing communication with us throughout the year and are always ready to extend their help. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the year’s start, I took a leap of faith by becoming a year well-being representative. This role provided me the chance to connect more closely with the staff, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Closing Reflections
All in all, this year has illuminated for me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was often unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I came to understand that I was never truly isolated. I also learned the art of managing stress from exams and deadlines while still allowing time for enjoyment. It’s been a transformative year, and I look forward with enthusiasm to what lies ahead.
