**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

About ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Nonetheless, as I reflect now, I perceive a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Making Connections: Taking the Initial Step

One of the most anxiety-inducing hurdles I encountered was connecting with new friends. This often proves to be one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it may be a concern you share. On my first day moving into accommodation, merely a few days ahead of the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with brief conversations with individuals who were in the same situation as me. What did I discover? I realized that taking that initial leap at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

### Managing the Workload: Seeking Assistance

Another challenge I encountered was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was unquestionably a transition from A-levels, and the jump from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can occasionally shake your confidence, particularly when observing others studying and feeling inadequate.

What aided me in navigating this was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are facing the same difficulties. So, pursue assistance! This was arguably the most significant lesson I learned in my first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help from your peers or the faculty. It’s an essential component of the learning experience.

### Encouragement from Faculty: Building Relationships

On the topic of faculty, the backing from the Materials department has been remarkable. The staff genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter challenges. They are compassionate and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I made a bold move by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect better with the staff, which has been invaluable. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My crucial lesson here is to leverage the support provided. You can never receive too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts: Welcoming the Journey

In summary, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the unease I felt—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, those feelings can be navigated. I’ve come to understand that I’m never alone on this journey, and I’ve learned how to balance having a good time with the unavoidable stress of exams and deadlines.
