**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was enveloped in nervousness, anxiety, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into such an experience was quite intimidating. Reflecting on it now, I realize this academic year has provided me with significant personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what have I learned, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you may feel the same apprehensions. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, which all began with casual conversations with fellow students who felt just as I did.
So, what did I glean from this? I found that taking that first step at the year’s beginning is essential. If you’re not entirely prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There are abundant social events and opportunities designed to help you engage with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With a diverse crowd across the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a visible escalation from A-levels, and an even steeper climb from the first term to the second. Being thrust into that environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe peers studying and feel as though you’re falling behind. However, one thing that reassured me was the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find a concept difficult, it’s likely that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This perhaps stands as the most crucial lesson from my first year—reach out to your classmates and faculty when you need guidance.
### The Value of Staff Support
Regarding the staff, I can’t stress enough how wonderful the Materials department team is. They genuinely desire your success and understand the trials students endure. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open regarding any difficulties we encountered. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until the end of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s outset, I made a commitment by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This opportunity enabled me to connect with the staff better, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway from this segment of university life is to capitalize on all the support provided. You can never have too much assistance!
### Conclusion
In summary, this year has revealed to me that the apprehensions I felt prior to and during university were mostly unwarranted. With the multitude of support mechanisms available from both staff and fellow students, I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly on my own. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to navigate the balance between enjoying my time and managing the unavoidable stress of examinations and deadlines.
