**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, trepidation, and doubts regarding what the future would hold. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and shy, plunging into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on this academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and remarkable memories. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my status today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your greatest worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes began, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I’ve discovered some of the closest friends I’ve ever had.
At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who align with my interests and principles. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small exchanges with other students who were equally unsure. My most valuable lesson? Take the plunge early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous social events and ways to engage with others. And above all, simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter others who connect with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the academic demands and the intricacies of the subject matter proved to be another significant hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when observing peers studying and apparently excelling.
What helped me maneuver through this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find yourself grappling with something, chances are your classmates are too. The pivotal point is to seek assistance—be it from your fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to ask for help may be the most crucial skill you cultivate in your first year.
### Cultivating Relationships with Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly care about student success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support services until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Stepping up as a year well-being representative was a significant leap for me, but it ultimately became one of my best choices. It allowed me to form connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal chats, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. And keep in mind, there’s no such thing as too much support—utilize all the resources at your disposal.
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I harbored—both before and during university—was mostly unwarranted. With the abundance of support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun. Most significantly, I’ve realized the value of stepping outside my comfort zone and embracing the opportunities in my path.
As I contemplate my first year, I feel thankful for the challenges, the personal growth, and the friendships formed. To anyone poised to embark on their university adventure: take the chance, seek assistance, and believe that you will discover where you belong.
