**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty as I prepared to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had once been shy and withdrawn, plunging into such a major life shift was outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on this year, I acknowledge a journey marked by growth, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting aspects of starting university was the thought of making new friends. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s probably something that crosses your mind as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes officially kicked off, I spent the whole day cocooned in my room, too anxious to step out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships, friends who feel like family.

What shifted? It began with casual conversations. I discovered that everyone was just as nervous as I was. Taking that crucial first step to engage others, even if it was merely a friendly “hello,” was pivotal. If you’re feeling uncertain, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material was yet another significant hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your competencies when witnessing others studying and apparently thriving.

What aided me in this adjustment was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, likely, others are too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year: don’t shy away from reaching out for help.

### Exceptional Staff and Support Services

On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department are outstanding. They truly desire for students to thrive and show understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

While I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support services until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. Engaging with the staff was transformative. As a well-being representative for the year, I had the chance to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal conversations, getting acquainted with the staff is among the best actions you can undertake for yourself. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

This year has demonstrated that the anxieties I experienced prior to and during university were often unwarranted. With the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance pressures like exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

In hindsight, I recognize a year of tremendous personal development, and I’m eager to continue this journey. If you’re on the brink of starting your own university chapter, keep in mind: take the plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You have the ability to succeed!
