**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my experience as a first-year student specializing in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, venturing into the unfamiliar was a significant departure from my comfort zone. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the challenge of forming friendships. Many incoming students share this apprehension about starting university, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and make introductions.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—both within my program and throughout the university. What was the key factor? Taking that initial leap of faith and engaging in casual conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what did I take away from this? First, it’s essential to take that first step, even when it feels overwhelming. If you’re not ready at that moment, don’t fret—there are abundant icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Second, the best advice I can offer is to simply be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Transition
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become stressed or question your skills when observing others studying and worrying about potentially lagging behind.
What aided me during this time was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s highly likely that others are as well. The key takeaway is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. This is perhaps the most vital lesson I grasped in my first year: never hesitate to ask for support.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They truly care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our concerns and offering wisdom.
Even though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had done so sooner. One of my best choices was taking on the role of a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and I strongly suggest seizing these opportunities. My primary takeaway here is straightforward: don’t shy away from using the resources and support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Overall, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to entering university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the myriad of support systems provided by staff and peers, I found that I was never truly alone. I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment, and I’ve developed significantly as an individual.
If you’re about to begin your university adventure, understand that feeling nervous is completely normal. But also recognize that a vibrant community and an abundance of support are ready to help you thrive. Take the plunge, be authentic, and welcome the challenges that lie ahead—you may just surprise yourself.
