**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I geared up to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Diving into the unknown was not a familiar experience for my inherently introverted and reserved nature. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I can’t help but contemplate the insights I’ve gained and the individual I’ve evolved into.

### Confronting the Fear of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered early in my journey was forming friendships. For many new students, this is a primary worry about starting university, and I was no different. On my first day in student accommodation, merely days before the term commenced, I secluded myself in my room for an entire day, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly claim that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve met within my course and at Imperial have truly become like a second family to me. It merely required me to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in simple conversations with those who were experiencing similar feelings.

What did I glean from this experience? Taking that initial leap of faith at the start of the year is always a worthwhile endeavor. If you’re not prepared immediately, don’t fret—there are ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I realized that being genuine is essential. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are bound to find individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Navigating the Academic Transition

Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level workload was quite stark, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even tougher. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially upon observing others who appear to be thriving.

What assisted me through these tough times was the awareness that everyone is wrestling with the same hurdles. If you’re struggling with a concept, likely others are facing the same difficulties. The most effective action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the academic staff. Developing the skill to ask for help is one of the most valuable lessons you can learn during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the subject of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been nothing short of amazing. They genuinely care about students’ success and empathize with the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained an open line of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Volunteering as a year well-being representative was one of the risks I took early on, and it helped me form meaningful relationships with staff. Whether through formal roles or casual encounters, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors can be incredibly advantageous. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to make use of the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve also learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fulfillment.

This year has been one of significant personal development, and I look forward with excitement to what lies ahead as I continue my journey in Materials Science and Engineering.
