**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had been naturally timid and introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar was not something I considered comfortable. However, as I reflect on a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I realize the valuable lessons I have gained and the progress I have made.

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you are a prospective student reading this, you may share similar feelings of unease. On my very first day moving into my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to emerge and meet new people. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. My classmates have become my second family, both within my program and throughout the university.

What aided me? Taking a chance. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy at first, do not fret—there will be plenty of social events and ice-breakers to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered the significance of being authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic load and intensity was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was noticeable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even greater. It can be easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others study and achieve. Nonetheless, one thing that kept me steady was the reassurance that everyone is on a similar journey.

If something is unclear, it’s likely that you are not alone in that feeling. Seeking assistance is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate during your first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### Cultivating Connections with Faculty

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication with us, addressing our queries and providing direction.

I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, a decision I wish I had made earlier. Early in the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This responsibility helped me establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal conversations, getting to know your lecturers and tutors is incredibly beneficial. Utilize the resources and assistance being offered—you can never have too much support!

### Main Takeaways

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I felt—both before beginning university and throughout the year—was frequently unnecessary. With the plethora of support options provided by staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and self-exploration.

So, for anyone gearing up to embark on their university experience: take that leap, welcome the challenges, and do not hesitate to seek assistance. You’ll experience growth in ways you never envisioned, and you just might have the time of your life in the process.
