**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I found myself engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I take a moment to look back on the previous academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable memories. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered initially was the challenge of making friends. Beginning university can be quite intimidating, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might also be one of your primary worries. On my first day at student housing, just days before classes officially commenced, I found myself spending the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to fellow students.
Now, looking back, I can wholeheartedly declare that I’ve developed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve connected with here—both within my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were navigating similar feelings.
What did I discover? The vital lesson is to take a bold step of faith at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t prepared or don’t feel at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities to bond with peers. Most importantly, just be your authentic self. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another major hurdle was adapting to the demands and intricacies of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was palpable, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you witness others studying and worry you’re lagging behind.
What facilitated my journey through this transition was recognizing that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re having difficulty understanding something, it’s probable that others are grappling with it as well. The most important lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out for support is vital.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of faculty, I cannot emphasize enough the amazing support provided by the Materials department. The staff are genuinely invested in the success of students and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and are consistently ready to lend a hand.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university experience. My most significant insight? Make the most of the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the unease I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was largely misplaced. There is a wealth of support accessible from both staff and fellow students to help you navigate the trials of university life. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve figured out how to balance the stresses of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and connection.
Looking back, I take pride in the strides I’ve made and the personal growth I’ve undergone. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, understand that it’s natural to feel apprehensive—but also recognize that you have the capacity to thrive, just as I have.
