**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was gearing up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who used to be quite timid, taking the plunge into the complexities of university life was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on a year of academic growth, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed.
### Taking the Leap: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student seeing this, it’s probably one of your concerns too. On my first day of moving into the student residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent a whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forwarding to today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life—friends who resemble a second family.
What made the difference? It all began with casual conversations. I realized that everyone else was also feeling the same way, just as nervous as I was. Taking that first step to connect with others made a significant impact. If you’re not quite ready to jump in immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet people throughout the year. The most vital lesson I learned is to embrace your true self. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Academic Challenge
Adapting to the workload and academic intensity was another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when witnessing others seemingly managing everything effortlessly.
What helped me navigate this experience was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone encounters difficulties at some point, and if something confuses you, it’s likely that others are feeling the same way. The important thing is to seek assistance—whether from your fellow students or faculty members. This proved to be one of the most essential skills I cultivated during my first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
A highlight of my time has been the remarkable support from the Materials department staff. They truly care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and offering direction.
Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, I wish I had reached out earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was a bold move I made early on, and it became a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My major takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much help.
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even during the year—was often ill-founded. Thanks to the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I realized I was never truly alone. I also learned how to balance the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Reflecting on my journey, I acknowledge how much I’ve matured, both academically and personally. For anyone on the verge of beginning their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the leap, be true to yourself, and don’t shy away from asking for help. You’ve got this!
