**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was about to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into such a major life transition felt overwhelming. Now, as I contemplate the past academic year, I perceive a journey marked by development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship
One of the most daunting challenges at the beginning of university was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this concern looms large, and I was no different. On my first day of settling into accommodation, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to present day, and I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
At Imperial, I discovered a supportive community—individuals who mirror my interests and values. It merely required a touch of casual conversation and the bravery to engage with others who were experiencing the same transition. Looking back, I have come to understand that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not prepared initially, don’t fret—there are abundant icebreaker events and chances to connect. Most crucially, I have come to appreciate that authenticity is essential. With such a heterogeneous community at Imperial, you will undoubtedly encounter individuals who resonate with you.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another significant obstacle was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university studies was pronounced, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more taxing. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or second-guess your capabilities when observing others study and wondering if you measure up.
What aided me in overcoming this was the recognition that I was not isolated in my challenges. Everyone was traversing similar difficulties, and if I struggled to grasp a concept, chances are others were too. The most important lesson I gleaned during my first year was to seek assistance. Whether from peers or faculty, reaching out for support can significantly impact your journey.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been outstanding. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and understand the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral resources available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had engaged with them earlier. Initially, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year, facilitating connections with faculty members. This turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to establish a rapport with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My most crucial takeaway? Leverage the support systems at your disposal—there’s no such thing as having too much help!
### Insights Gained
In reflecting on my first year, I have come to realize that the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was largely unwarranted. With a plethora of support resources available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has imparted lessons on balancing the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and fulfillment.
Ultimately, university is a journey of development, and taking those initial steps—whether it’s forming friendships, seeking assistance, or stepping beyond your comfort zone—can lead to remarkable rewards.
