**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was about to commence my first year as a newcomer in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown was far outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I identify a phase abundant with growth, obstacles, and a significant amount of happiness. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, you might share similar concerns about this aspect of embarking on university life. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days before classes began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Jump to the present, and I’m pleased to report that I’ve fostered some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. These bonds have become my second family here at Imperial, all of which sparked from brief dialogues with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what did I take away from this? I recognized that embracing a leap of faith at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not at ease or ready right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to engage with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the demands and intricacies of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when observing others studying or grasping concepts more swiftly than you.
What assisted me in overcoming those moments of uncertainty was the reminder that everyone was navigating the same journey. If I struggled with a topic, it was likely that others were finding it challenging too. The central lesson? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from colleagues or instructors, asking for help is crucial during your initial year.
### The Importance of Supportive Staff
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open with us and displayed compassion for our challenges.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had acted sooner. One of my best decisions was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to develop relationships with staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are various ways to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support systems accessible to you—you can never receive too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I have learned a tremendous amount. The anxious feelings I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—were frequently unfounded. With the extensive array of support available from staff and fellow students alike, I came to realize that I was never truly alone.
Above all, I learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while still making time for enjoyment. University is an opportunity for personal development, and although challenges are unavoidable, they also present chances to learn and succeed.
If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, keep this in mind: take that leap, seek help when needed, and remember to enjoy the journey as well.
