**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my first-year experience in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Having been a shy and introverted person, diving enthusiastically into this new chapter felt quite overwhelming. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can assert with confidence that it has been a transformative journey. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Overcoming the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles was establishing friendships. For many incoming students, this tends to be one of the primary worries when entering university. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can say with pride that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family both within the university and my program.
What lessons did I take away from this experience? Firstly, it’s essential to take that first leap of faith. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be many icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Secondly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied group of individuals at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was noticeable, and the change from the first to second term felt even more pronounced. It can be easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.
What assisted me in navigating this was recognizing that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that your peers are experiencing the same issues. The essential takeaway is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning how to seek help may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and offering direction.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral resources until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with them earlier. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made early on, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, becoming acquainted with the staff is one of the best actions you can take. My major insight? Utilize the support available—you can never receive too much help.
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt—both before and throughout university—was frequently unwarranted. There is a considerable amount of support accessible, from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in overcoming challenges. I’ve discovered that I am never truly alone, and it’s feasible to juggle pressures such as exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Reflecting on the past year, I am thankful for the growth I’ve undergone and the relationships I’ve formed. To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and remember to seek help when necessary.
