**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had consistently been quiet and introverted, stepping into the unknown seemed daunting. Reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment, I can now comprehend just how impactful this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained from this year, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxieties of Making Connections
One of the most significant hurdles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. For many incoming students, this can be a frightening challenge, and if you’re browsing this as a potential student, it might rank highly on your list of worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. These bonds have become a second family to me, not just within my course but throughout the university as a whole. What was the catalyst? Taking that initial leap and engaging in casual conversations with others who were equally as apprehensive.
Here’s my takeaway: it’s beneficial to push yourself to make that leap early. If you’re not entirely at ease or prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, simply be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Transition
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re doing enough.
What assisted me through this period was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching team. This, without question, is one of the most crucial abilities to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how exceptional the Materials department staff are. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they sustained open lines of communication with us and exhibited understanding of our challenges.
I didn’t fully capitalize on the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to develop connections with staff members. This proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through official positions or informal encounters, getting to know the staff is one of the most advantageous actions you can take for your own benefit. My most significant insight? Don’t hesitate to utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance.
### Key Takeaways
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently baseless. There’s an abundance of support available, both from the faculty and fellow students, to help you tackle the challenges ahead. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that enjoying university life is achievable, even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I advance, I’m thankful for the personal growth, the friendships I’ve established, and the lessons I’ve absorbed. To anyone about to embark on their university journey: take the plunge, seek help, and savor the experience. You might just astonish yourself.
