**Living in London: Nine Months of Reflections**
*By Harsh Gupta, MSc. Advanced Materials Science and Engineering*
Nine months back, I started my adventure of residing in London. Although this period may appear brief, it has provided me ample opportunity to discover and engage with the city’s distinct vibrancy. London is celebrated not only for its varied housing options but also for the vibrant communities that reside here. For students, the city presents an array of housing possibilities, from student lodgings to private leases. Choices include ensuite and shared bathrooms, private and shared rooms, studio flats, and house shares.
For domestic students, organizing apartment viewings tends to be relatively uncomplicated. In contrast, international students can utilize resources like Rightmove, Zoopla, and SpareRoom to investigate possible lodgings online. These platforms offer information about amenities and accessibility to public transport, making the transition easier for newcomers.
### Securing My Spot in Central London
When I initiated my search for accommodation, my aim was to secure a room in Central London. Being close to key attractions, social venues, and my university, Imperial College, was crucial. London is segmented into six concentric zones, with zones one and two being the most central. The city’s outstanding transport system—including the Underground (tube), buses, and trains—facilitates easy travel across zones. However, traveling between zones can be pricey, with daily costs sometimes exceeding £5.25. To mitigate these expenses, I often opted to walk shorter distances rather than rely on public transport.
For longer journeys, the Oyster card provides discounted fares, making transit more budget-friendly for students. In addition to the Underground, the London Overground and National Rail services reach areas beyond the central zones, although fares differ based on distance and the pricing scheme of train operators.
Residing in Central London comes with advantages, but it also involves elevated living expenses. To keep costs manageable, I chose to share a room with a friend who was also enrolled at university. This decision greatly lowered our rent. I selected intercollegiate student accommodations, which allowed for interaction with peers from various backgrounds and similar age groups—a combination that’s harder to achieve in private rentals.
### The Significance of Accessibility
For me, being near grocery stores was an essential criterion. Well-known supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op are conveniently located, while budget-conscious alternatives such as Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland appeal to students seeking to minimize expenses. Proximity to vital shops, including pharmacies, is particularly beneficial during hectic times like exam periods, saving crucial time for errands.
### Discovering London’s Cultural Richness
Selecting the right neighbourhood in London can be a challenging endeavor, given the city’s vastness and diversity. London’s ethnic communities play a pivotal role in its cultural character, providing a vibrant selection of neighbourhoods to discover. Numerous international students find their way to areas that evoke feelings of home.
For example, Southall in West London serves as a center for the South Asian population, complete with Indian eateries, grocery shops, and traditional clothing stores. Brixton in South London is known for its Afro-Caribbean heritage and dynamic music scene. At the same time, Chinatown in the West End is a lively area brimming with Chinese restaurants, shops, and cultural festivities. These neighbourhoods represent just a fraction of the cultural wealth that London has to offer.
### Carving Out Your Niche in London
In the end, the ideal area to reside in London hinges on your personal tastes and priorities. Whether you are captivated by the city’s varied accommodation selections, its cultural hubs, or the convenience of its transport networks, London provides something for everyone. Embrace the adventure of finding your new home in this extraordinary city and take the time to delve into its countless dimensions.
