**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I set out on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unknown was not something my inherently shy and reserved personality was used to. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable moments, I recognize the extent of my learning and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered early on was the quest to form friendships. For many incoming students, this is among the most significant concerns about beginning university, and I was certainly no different. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve found some of the best friends I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have come to feel like a second family. All it took was a little small talk with others who shared my predicament.
What did I take away from this? I came to understand that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel ready or at ease right away, don’t stress—there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned to embrace my true self. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another notable obstacle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the jump from the first term to the second felt even more significant. It’s easy to feel inundated in such a setting, particularly when you observe others studying and start to question your own capabilities.
What helped me navigate this was the realization that everyone faces similar struggles. If you find something confusing, chances are others share that sentiment. The essential point is to seek help—whether from classmates or instructors. This is perhaps the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty and Pastoral Support
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about our success and are very empathetic to the challenges we encounter. They maintain regular communication with us throughout the year and are ever-ready to provide assistance.
I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had started sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved to be an invaluable asset. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these possibilities. My main takeaway here is that there’s no such thing as too much support—don’t hesitate to utilize the resources at your disposal.
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has imparted a wealth of knowledge. I’ve discovered that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the multitude of support options provided by both staff and peers, I was never truly alone.
Most significantly, I’ve learned how to strike a balance between the demands of exams and deadlines while relishing the pleasure of forging friendships and immersing myself in university life. It’s been a year of personal growth, and I take pride in how far I’ve progressed since that apprehensive fresher in October 2022.
If you’re about to begin your own university adventure, remember that it’s perfectly fine to feel anxious. Embrace those leaps of faith, seek assistance when needed, and make sure to savor the experience. You’re capable of overcoming it all!
