**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has typically been shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was not something I was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year that has been transformative—filled with growth, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what lessons have I gathered from this year, and what’s my current situation?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the challenge of making friends. The transition to university can feel overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student, this may rank high among your concerns as well. On my first day in student housing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can assert I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—companions who seem like a second family.

What aided me? Taking that first step of courage. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to meet others in similar situations. I also discovered that the best approach is simply to be yourself. With such a varied group at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another significant challenge was adapting to the course load and the heightened difficulty of the subjects. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more strenuous. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.

What helped me navigate this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re wrestling with a concept, it’s likely others are too. The trick is to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. Learning to seek help is one of the most beneficial lessons I absorbed throughout my first year.

### Assistance from Faculty and Support Services
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is fantastic. The lecturers and support staff genuinely desire students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They foster open communication and are always prepared to assist.

Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral care until the latter part of the year, I regret not utilizing it earlier. Early in the term, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are myriad ways to engage with faculty, and making those connections can greatly enhance your university experience. My major takeaway? Utilize the support accessible to you—you can never have too much aid.

### Insights Gained
This year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the broad spectrum of support options provided by staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment.

Reflecting on it, my first year at Imperial was a period of growth, resilience, and exploration. If you’re about to embark on a comparable journey, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. Take those courageous steps, seek help when you need it, and above all, savor the experience.
