**Nine Months in London: Insights from a Student’s Experience**
*By Harsh Gupta, MSc. Advanced Materials Science and Engineering*
Nine months back, I started my adventure of residing in London. Although this might not appear to be a lengthy period, it has been sufficient for me to gain substantial knowledge about this dynamic city. London boasts a rich mix of cultures and communities, as well as a wide array of housing choices, catering to every need. Whether you are a student or a working professional, a range of living options awaits you, from ensuite and shared bathrooms to private and shared rooms, studio flats, and house share arrangements.
For students already based in the UK, arranging viewings for apartments is fairly simple. Conversely, international students like me frequently depend on platforms such as Rightmove, Zoopla, or SpareRoom to research possible housing online. These sites offer information on amenities and closeness to public transportation, facilitating informed decisions from a distance.
### Locating the Ideal Residence
As I commenced my search for accommodation, I concentrated on securing a room in Central London. Being near prominent attractions, vibrant social spots, and my university campus at Imperial College was crucial for me. London is segmented into six concentric zones, with zones one and two being the most central. The city features a fantastic public transportation system—including the Underground (tube), buses, and trains—which allows for easy movement across these zones.
To minimize travel expenses, I preferred walking short distances rather than relying on public transport. Traveling between zones can incur charges of up to £5.25 a day, but the discounted Oyster card options have made commuting to my university more economical. For longer trips, the London Overground and National Rail services reach beyond the Underground’s coverage, connecting areas further afield from central London. However, fares for these services differ based on distance and the train operator.
Residing in Central London offers various advantages but also entails higher living expenses. To lower costs, I made the decision to share a room with a friend attending university as well. This setup substantially decreased our rental fees. I also opted for intercollegiate student accommodations, as these provided a chance to connect with peers from assorted backgrounds and similar age groups—an aspect that’s more challenging to find with private rentals.
### Close to Necessities
For me, proximity to grocery stores was an essential condition. Well-known supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op are ubiquitous, while budget-friendly choices such as Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland serve those looking to economize. Being near vital stores and pharmacies proves particularly advantageous during hectic times, such as exam periods, when every minute counts.
### Discovering London’s Varied Neighborhoods
Selecting the right neighborhood can be daunting, considering London’s immense scope and diversity. The city’s ethnic communities form a vital part of its cultural tapestry, providing a wealth of experiences. Numerous international students tend to gravitate towards areas where they can discover a sense of familiarity and connection to their own culture.
For example, Southall in West London has a significant South Asian population, featuring Indian eateries, grocery shops, and traditional clothing stores. In South London, Brixton thrives with its Afro-Caribbean heritage and lively music scene. Meanwhile, Chinatown in the West End presents a bustling area filled with Chinese restaurants, shops, and cultural festivities. These neighborhoods are merely a few illustrations of the cultural richness that London is proud to showcase.
### Concluding Thoughts
In the end, the ideal area to reside in London hinges on your individual preferences and needs. Whether your focus is on proximity to your university, cultural connections, or affordability, London’s extensive housing options and neighborhoods cater to everyone. Embrace the city’s vibrant cultural landscape, explore its distinct enclaves, and relish the convenience and thrill of life in this extraordinary metropolis.
