**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and ambiguity regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone characterized by shyness and introversion, venturing into the unfamiliar felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on a year of academics brimming with growth, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I appreciate the extent of my learning and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was the task of making friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share this sentiment—it’s a widespread concern. On my first day in student housing, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships in my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, not just within my course, but throughout the university. What made the difference? Taking that initial step. Engaging in brief conversations with individuals in comparable situations helped me establish connections.

So, what did I glean from this experience? First, it’s always beneficial to venture beyond your comfort zone early on. If you’re not prepared right away, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others will arise. Second, the best approach is simply to be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the workload and academic intensity was another key obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and moving from the first term to the second presented even more challenges. It’s easy to feel swamped and doubt your abilities, especially when observing others studying diligently.

What aided me in this process was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, chances are, so are others. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance. This became perhaps the most vital lesson I learned in my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out for support from fellow students or teaching staff.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in student success and are sympathetic to the hurdles we encounter. They maintain accessible communication throughout the year, addressing any concerns we bring forth.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to cultivate connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best benefits you can give yourself. My suggestion? Utilize the support systems available—you can never have an excess of help.

### Insights Gained
In reflecting on my first year, I came to realize that many of the anxieties I harbored—both before entering university and throughout the year—were baseless. With the extensive support offered by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. This year has instructed me on balancing stressors such as exams and deadlines with moments of joy and laughter.

To anyone preparing to embark on their university journey: embrace the obstacles, take those leaps of faith, and remember that assistance is always accessible.
