**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was preparing to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my timid and introverted nature was used to. Yet, reflecting on this past year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Overcoming the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely something that concerns you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes kicked off, I lingered in my room all day, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships of my life.

The pivotal moment? Taking that first step to engage in light conversation with others who felt just as uneasy as I did. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all thanks to those initial chats. If there’s one lesson I’ve learned, it’s this: make the effort early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be plenty of ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. And above all, be authentic. In such a diverse university community, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your personality.

### Confronting Academic Difficulties

Adapting to the academic demands and complexity of university material was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second proved even more intense. It’s easy to find oneself overwhelmed or questioning your capabilities when observing peers who seem to grasp everything with ease.

What assisted me in overcoming this was coming to terms with the fact that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re finding something challenging, it’s likely that others are too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or instructors. Developing the habit of seeking help is perhaps the most crucial skill you will cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is truly outstanding. The professors and tutors genuinely care about your success and are understanding of the obstacles students encounter. They foster open communication throughout the academic year and are always willing to address any issues.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support system until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Early on, I ventured to become a year well-being representative, which helped me establish connections with faculty members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My biggest insight? Make the most of the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve learned that much of the apprehension I felt—both prior to and during university—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support from faculty and fellow students, those feelings of uncertainty can be alleviated. I’ve realized I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned to strike a balance between enjoying my experience and managing the pressures of exams and deadlines.

This past year has been a journey of development, and I’m eager to discover what the next chapter brings.
