**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into such a new and demanding setting felt incredibly intimidating. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, hurdles, and numerous joyful moments. So, what insights have I gained from this experience, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was forming friendships. This is a major concern for many incoming students, and I certainly fell into that category. On my inaugural day in student accommodations, just days before the official start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. These bonds have become like a second family to me. The pivotal moment? Simply breaking free from my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with individuals who were in a similar situation.

What did I glean from this? Taking that first step at the year’s beginning is essential. If you aren’t quite ready, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that staying true to yourself is the most effective strategy. With such a varied group of people within the course and the university, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another notable challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the intricacy of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the change from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It wasn’t always straightforward to maintain confidence when surrounded by peers who seemed to have everything under control.

What assisted me in this process was understanding that I wasn’t isolated in my struggle. Everyone was tackling similar issues, and if I was confused about something, it was likely that my classmates were too. The main lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, reaching out for help is one of the most vital skills to hone during your first year.

### Assistance from the Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are genuinely remarkable. They sincerely desire for students to excel and empathize with the challenges we encounter. Over the course of the year, they kept communication channels open, addressing student inquiries and providing guidance.

While I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the year’s outset, I made the bold decision to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to form connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems in place—you can never have too much help.

### Insights Gained

In hindsight, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the expansive array of support options from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance academic pressure with enjoyment, and I’ve evolved in ways I never thought possible.

So, to anyone gearing up to embark on their university journey: embrace the challenges, take those courageous steps, and remember that assistance is always accessible.
