**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown was a significant departure from my comfort zone. Reflecting now, I recognize a year that was transformative—filled with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of joy. But what insights has this year provided me, and where am I today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered at the commencement of university was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be one of your primary concerns as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term officially started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to emerge and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can affirm that I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever known—friends who feel like family.
How did I achieve this? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who shared similar feelings. The most crucial lesson I’ve learned is to take that early leap of faith. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the academic demands and the increase in content difficulty was another notable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was strenuous, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s common to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when observing others study and apparently thrive.
What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to reach out for help is arguably the most significant skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish to see their students succeed and recognize the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue with us and demonstrated empathy for our challenges.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, and I regret not utilizing it earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive choices I made early on, and it turned out to be an excellent decision. It enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which became invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway? Make use of the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Main Takeaways from My Initial Year
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. An abundance of support exists, ranging from faculty to fellow students, to guide you through the challenges. I’ve also discovered that I’m never genuinely alone on this journey and that it’s feasible to find joy and maintain balance, even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
This year has been marked by growth, resilience, and self-discovery. If you’re about to embark on your university adventure, recognize that feeling nervous is entirely normal—but also understand that you’re entering an environment brimming with opportunities to flourish, connect, and succeed.
