**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can’t help but think about the insights I’ve gained and my progress.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the idea of forging new friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it might be among your top concerns as well. I remember my first day in student housing clearly—I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become like family to me. All it required was stepping outside of my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with others who were equally anxious.
What did I discover? Taking that first step is invariably rewarding. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, I learned to just be myself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adapting to the volume of work and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more profound. It was easy to become inundated and doubt my capabilities, particularly when measuring myself against others.
What guided me through this was the realization that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others did too. Seeking assistance became my greatest asset. Whether it was turning to classmates or seeking help from instructors, I learned that cooperation and support are essential when facing the academic hurdles of university life.
### The Value of Support and Connection
On the topic of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The faculty and tutors truly aim for students to flourish and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year, addressing our issues and providing assistance.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members on a more profound level, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to foster relationships with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
This academic year has shown me that the anxiety I felt pre-university—and even throughout the year—was largely unfounded. With the diverse support options provided by both staff and peers, I was never truly on my own. I’ve learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment.
Looking back, I recognize a year filled with growth, perseverance, and unforgettable experiences. To anyone about to embark on their university adventure: welcome the challenges, take those bold steps, and remember that support is always accessible.
