**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my first-year adventure in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, entering uncharted territory was far outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on the past year, I can see it was filled with personal development, difficulties, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For countless newcomers, this is among the most intimidating facets of commencing university, and I certainly felt the same. On my initial day at student housing, merely a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Now, looking back, I can proudly state that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve crossed paths with here—both in my program and throughout the university—have turned into my second family. It all began with incremental efforts, such as engaging in light conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain.

So, what did I learn? First, take the plunge right from the start. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Second, be authentic. With such a varied group of individuals at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the demands of the workload and the complexity of the material posed another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more marked. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your abilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.

What guided me through these challenging times was the understanding that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, others are likely experiencing it too. The crucial takeaway is to seek assistance. This might be the single most essential skill to cultivate in your first year—whether it involves reaching out to classmates or requesting help from staff.

### Establishing Connections with Faculty

On the subject of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support staff genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the academic year and are always available to assist.

I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, and I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early in the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous pathways to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most important lesson? Make the most of the support that is accessible to you—you can never receive too much help.

### Key Takeaways

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and during the academic year—was mostly misplaced. With the extensive array of support available from staff and fellow students, I came to realize I was never truly isolated. I also discovered how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with instances of joy and enjoyment.

Reflecting on my journey, I recognize the growth I’ve undergone, and I am eager to see what the next phase of this adventure will bring.
