**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt quite intimidating. Now that I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you may share similar feelings of anxiety. On my initial day in student housing, just days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful relationships in my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my program and throughout the university. What was the key to this transformation? It all initiated with small steps—engaging in casual talks with those experiencing similar feelings.
The greatest lesson I garnered? Embrace that leap of faith early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Most crucially, just be true to yourself. With such a diverse crowd at Imperial, you’re destined to connect with individuals who share your passions and values.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the rigorous academic workload and the intricacies of the subjects was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university proved to be difficult, and the leap from the first to the second term felt particularly steep. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and seemingly thriving.
What aided me in managing this was the understanding that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re finding something challenging to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The secret lies in seeking assistance—whether it be from peers or faculty members. This perhaps represents the most essential skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The instructors and support staff are genuinely invested in students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open lines of communication and were consistently ready to address our concerns.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was a significant leap I took at the commencement of the year, and it became an invaluable experience. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty, which proved tremendously advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and I highly encourage utilizing these opportunities. The support they provide is there for a purpose—don’t hesitate to take advantage of it!
### Major Lessons from My First Year
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve realized that the nervousness I harbored before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the vast array of support systems available, from staff to fellow students, assistance is always accessible.
This year has shown me that I am never entirely alone, even during stressful periods such as exams and deadlines. Most importantly, I’ve learned to balance hard work and enjoyment, optimizing my university journey.
To anyone about to embark on their own adventure, remember: take that leap, seek assistance, and be yourself. You’ve got this!
