**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was brimming with anxious excitement as I prepared to embark on my studies in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, plunging into university life felt like an immense obstacle. Looking back now, I recognize a year that was enlightening—filled with growth, trials, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be among your primary worries. I recall my first day in student housing, where I stayed cooped up in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.
What shifted? I took a risk and initiated small talks with individuals who were, like me, navigating the same experience. Over time, these brief exchanges blossomed into substantial friendships, and I genuinely feel like I’ve found a second family at Imperial. My recommendation? Be courageous and take that initial step early. If you’re not quite ready yet, don’t fret—there are many icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others who share your passions and values.
### Facing Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic expectations of university posed another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university coursework was considerable, and the jump from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others seemingly thriving.
What benefited me was the realization that I wasn’t alone. Chances are, if you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, others do too. The essential takeaway is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to request help is perhaps the most crucial skill you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
One of the highlights of my experience has been the remarkable support from the Materials department faculty. They genuinely desire for students to excel and are compassionate toward the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and were always willing to assist.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had done so sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it ended up being one of the most fulfilling choices I made. It enabled me to forge strong relationships with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors can have a substantial impact. My most important takeaway? Make the most of the assistance available—it’s there to help you flourish.
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I harbored—both before and during university—were misplaced. With the support of staff and fellow students, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly isolated when facing challenges. I’ve also learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and relaxation.
Ultimately, this year has been a journey of personal development, brimming with lessons that I will carry forward throughout my time at Imperial and beyond. If you’re about to commence your own university journey, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious—but also realize that you are capable of overcoming those fears and flourishing in this new chapter of your life.
