**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future as I geared up to commence my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar wasn’t an experience my formerly introverted nature was used to. Now, as I reflect on this past academic year, I see a journey rich with personal development, obstacles, and ample enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Overcoming the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was making connections. For many incoming students, this is one of the foremost concerns about starting university, and I was certainly included in that group. On the first day I arrived at student housing, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively claim that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. At Imperial and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with those who were in similar situations.
So, what insight did I gain? I realized that embracing a leap of faith at the beginning of the year is invariably rewarding. If you’re not yet prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I discovered that embracing your true self is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the demands and complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It wasn’t always straightforward to maintain confidence in such a rigorous atmosphere, particularly when it appeared that others were soaring while I seemed to be lagging behind.
What aided me during this period was the recognition that everyone is navigating similar waters. If something doesn’t click for you, there’s a good chance there are others who share your confusion. The most crucial lesson I gleaned in my first year was the importance of reaching out for help. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, seeking assistance can significantly impact your experience.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and support staff genuinely wish to see students thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. They foster open lines of communication with students all year long, addressing concerns and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early on, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to foster relationships with staff members. This proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway here? Embrace the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I understand that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during university was largely unwarranted. With the broad spectrum of support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. I’ve evolved personally, confronted challenges head-on, and established enduring friendships. If you’re about to start your own university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help, and always stay true to yourself.
