**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
In October 2022, ten months ago, I was enveloped in feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who had previously been timid and introverted, venturing into the unknown felt quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past year, I realize it has been a time filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could also be a significant worry for you. On my first day in student housing, just before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, paralyzed by nerves and unable to introduce myself. Fast forward to today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who resemble a second family.
How did this transformation occur? It began with simple conversations and reaching out to others who were experiencing similar feelings. What I discovered is that initiating interactions at the beginning of the academic year is essential. If you’re hesitant or not feeling ready, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to meet new people. Above all, simply be yourself. With such a vibrant array of individuals present at university, you are likely to find those who align with your interests and beliefs.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was acclimating to the academic workload and the complexities of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel swamped or question your skills, especially when observing others study and assuming they have everything under control.
What guided me through this was the realization that we are all in this together. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are too. The trick is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or instructors. This has been perhaps the most crucial lesson I gleaned during my first year: do not shy away from asking for help.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department is remarkable. They are genuinely invested in student success and are fully aware of the hurdles we confront. They show understanding and maintain transparent communication throughout the year to tackle any concerns that arise.
I did not take full advantage of the pastoral support offered until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key insight? Make the most of the support networks available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help.
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during the year was frequently baseless. Thanks to the extensive support options from both staff and fellow students, assistance is always accessible. I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to juggle having fun while coping with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I contemplate my first year, I feel thankful for the challenges, personal development, and the friendships I have established. If you are about to start your own university adventure, remember it’s completely normal to feel anxious—but also keep in mind that you will find your path, just as I did.
