**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been somewhat introverted, diving into the unknown was far outside my comfort zone. Reflecting now, I recognize an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what lessons has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Challenge of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was making friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may also have concerns about this part of starting university. On my first day in student housing, a few days before classes began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, within my course, I’ve discovered a second family. It all initiated with a simple act: engaging in casual conversation with fellow students who were just as apprehensive as I was.

What did I glean from this? Taking that initial risk is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling ready or comfortable at the outset, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and opportunities to make connections. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Another major challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was striking, and the change from the first term to the second term was even more overwhelming. It’s easy to become daunted or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re keeping pace.

What helped me navigate those moments of insecurity was the understanding that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely that others share your sentiments. The essential point is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most vital skill you can acquire in your first year.

### The Supportive Faculty

On the topic of help, the staff within the Materials department is truly wonderful. They genuinely care about students’ success and are fully aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open channels of communication with us and were always eager to address our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, I do wish I had sought it out earlier. Early on, I took the initiative by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was mostly unwarranted. There exists an abundance of support available, whether from staff or fellow students, to help you tackle any challenges.

This year has also revealed to me that I’m never genuinely alone, even amid stressful periods such as examinations and deadlines. Most significantly, I’ve learned how to balance diligent work with leisure.

As I contemplate this transformative year, I am thankful for the growth I’ve undergone and look forward to what lies ahead in the coming years.
