**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the year, I recognize an academic journey marked by growth, obstacles, and cherished memories. So, what have I discovered, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most challenging aspects I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be one of your primary concerns. I clearly remember my first day moving into my residence. I spent the whole day holed up in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, I can proudly assert that I’ve found some of the best friends I’ve ever had. These friends have become like a second family to me, and it all started with light conversation and shared experiences.
So, what’s the main takeaway? Take that plunge early. Even if you’re hesitant or feel awkward, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. And above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major hurdle was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and think they have it all figured out.
What assisted me through this was realizing that everyone is going through similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult, it’s likely that others are as well. The most vital lesson I took from my first year was to seek help. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out can significantly impact your experience.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support staff genuinely wish for students to succeed and understand the difficulties we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and are always ready to assist.
I didn’t make full use of the available pastoral support until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge strong connections with staff, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, getting acquainted with the staff is among the best things you can do for yourself. My advice? Fully leverage the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the backing of faculty, peers, and the broader university community, those emotions became manageable. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
This year has been a journey of personal development, and I’m appreciative of the challenges and successes that have molded me. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, remember to take those leaps, seek help, and embrace the experience.
