**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. For someone who has always been timid and introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, obstacles, and a multitude of cherished memories. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Taking the Plunge: Building Friendships
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this often ranks as a top concern when starting college. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent a whole day cocooned in my room, too apprehensive to go out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my degree program and throughout the institution. It all began with casual conversations with peers who were experiencing similar feelings. What did I uncover? Taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy initially, fret not—there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I learned to be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Managing the Academic Shift
An additional considerable obstacle was acclimatizing to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was quite significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying and wondering if you’re doing enough.

What assisted me in overcoming these emotions was the recognition that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. In my view, this is the most crucial skill to hone in your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and support staff genuinely wish for students to thrive and comprehend the challenges we encounter. They show empathy and keep lines of communication open throughout the year to address our issues.

I didn’t make the most of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, and I regret not utilizing it earlier. Early on, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway here? Make the most of the support provided to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced before—and during—my university experience was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support offered by both faculty and fellow students, I’ve come to realize I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned to balance having fun with managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

Reflecting on the year, I perceive a period of growth, resilience, and unforgettable moments. To anyone preparing to embark on a similar adventure: take the plunge, seek assistance, and seize the opportunities that come your way.
