**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about the road ahead. I was poised to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted, stepping into the unknown was a considerable departure from my usual comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and memorable moments, I can appreciate the significant knowledge I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Unease of Forming Friendships
One of the greatest challenges I encountered was the task of making friends. For numerous incoming students, this ranks among the primary sources of anxiety regarding university life, and I certainly felt the same. On my first day in student housing, just days before the term officially kicked off, I found myself cooped up in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some incredibly close friendships. The friends I’ve made at Imperial have truly become like a second family to me. It only took a willingness to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with others who were equally anxious.
So, what’s the takeaway? Taking risks at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. Above all, be true to yourself. With the diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find others who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and moving from the first term to the second proved to be even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when observing your peers and assuming they’re faring better than you.
What aided me the most was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential part is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help may be the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how wonderful the Materials department is. The teaching staff and support team are genuinely invested in the success of students and are aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing support.
Though I only took full advantage of the pastoral support at the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the staff, and I warmly encourage you to seize them. My most significant lesson? Never hesitate to utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to beginning university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. There’s an abundance of support accessible, be it from faculty or fellow students, to aid you in overcoming any obstacles. This year has shown me that I’m never truly alone and that it’s entirely possible to relish university life, even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I progress, I am thankful for the growth, friendships, and lessons this year has offered. To anyone about to embark on their own university journey: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t forget to reach out for help when needed.
