**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and withdrawn, venturing into the unfamiliar felt intimidating. Looking back now, I can recognize how significantly I have evolved over the past academic year—navigating challenges, acquiring invaluable knowledge, and enjoying numerous moments of fun along the way. So, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, a few days before classes officially commenced, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—people who feel like my second family.

The pivotal moment came when I took a small yet impactful step: starting casual conversations with others who were feeling just as apprehensive. I discovered that taking an early leap of faith is essential. If you’re not prepared to jump in straight away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, I realized that being your authentic self is the best tactic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and moving from the first to the second term felt even more arduous. It’s all too easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying and assuming they’re ahead of you.

What aided me in managing this was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential thing is to reach out for help—be it from fellow students or faculty. Learning to seek assistance is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Helpful Staff and Pastoral Support
In terms of support, one of the highlights of my experience has been the extraordinary staff in the Materials department. They are genuinely invested in our success and show a great deal of understanding for the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing direction.

Even though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be a fulfilling journey. It enabled me to form connections with staff members, which was invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to get to know the staff, and I wholeheartedly recommend seizing these chances. My key takeaway? Never hesitate to make use of the resources and support available—you can never receive too much help!

### Insights Gained
This year has imparted the lesson that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unnecessary. Thanks to the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I discovered that I was never truly alone. I also learned how to balance pressures such as exams and deadlines with instances of happiness and relaxation.

Reflecting on the past year, I see a time rich in growth, resilience, and unforgettable moments. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, embrace the challenges and take those leaps—you may just surprise yourself with the extent of your capabilities.
