### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a first-year student, and stepping into unfamiliar territory was a considerable departure from my comfort zone as someone who had always been introverted and reserved. Looking back now, I reflect on a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standpoint?

#### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was the quest to make friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share the same apprehension—it’s a frequent concern when beginning university life. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all started with casual conversations and bonding with individuals who were in similar situations as me. The most significant lesson I learned? Take that initial leap. Even if you don’t feel fully prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and opportunities to engage with others. And above all, just be genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another notable challenge was adapting to the rigorous workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was distinctly apparent, and the shift from the first to the second term seemed even tougher. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your competencies when you observe others studying and assume they’re ahead of you.

What aided me during this period was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having trouble with a topic, it’s likely that others are too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

#### The Encouraging Staff

On the note of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and show understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us and responded to our concerns.

Although I didn’t leverage the pastoral support until near the end of the year, I wish I had done so sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it turned out to be one of the best choices I made. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these chances. The support you receive can transform your experience.

#### Key Insights

This year has illustrated to me that the apprehensiveness I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was often misplaced. An abundance of support is accessible, whether from staff or fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

Reflecting on my first year at Imperial, it has been a voyage of growth, self-exploration, and relationship-building. If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, embrace the hurdles, take the risks, and remember that support is always just around the corner.
