**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar felt incredibly challenging. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I find myself contemplating the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On my initial day in student accommodation, I remained in my room the whole day, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The pivotal moment occurred when I chose to take a chance and initiate small conversations with others who were just as unfamiliar with the situation as I was. Gradually, these discussions evolved into significant friendships, and I now feel as though I’ve found a second family at Imperial.

What lesson did I draw from this experience? First, it’s beneficial to take that risk in the early stages, even if it feels uncomfortable. If you aren’t prepared immediately, don’t fret—there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Secondly, the best approach is being your true self. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major hurdle was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The leap from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when witnessing others study and pondering if you’re keeping pace.

What supported me through these challenges was understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it stands to reason that others are too. The crucial lesson here is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is one of the most crucial abilities you can develop during your first year.

### Establishing Relationships with Supportive Faculty

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely desire for students to succeed and are understanding of the issues we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and were always willing to address our concerns.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. One of my best decisions was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate connections with staff members, which became an invaluable experience. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, familiarizing yourself with the staff is among the best actions you can take. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—you can never have enough help!

### Insights Gained

Looking back, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. Given the abundant support options from both staff and fellow students, I never truly faced challenges alone. I’ve learned to manage pressures like exams and due dates alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment, and I’ve developed immensely as an individual.

To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure: welcome the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and remember that support is consistently within your grasp.
